Four people have been killed in a Russian air strike on Kyiv overnight, Ukrainian officials report. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that air defences were active during the assault, which shattered windows and caused a fire in the Shevchenkivskyi district. A metro station and nearby buildings were also damaged, though the specific target remains unclear.
Authorities warned of a ballistic missile threat, urging residents to seek shelter. Videos shared online revealed a car engulfed in flames and streets flooded with water from damaged infrastructure.
This marks the second deadly attack on Kyiv this month, following a strike on New Year’s Day. In southern Zaporizhzhia, six people were injured in a Russian strike on Saturday, with one woman reportedly in critical condition.
These attacks come amid ongoing escalation in the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Earlier this week, Ukraine launched significant strikes on Russian territory, targeting ammunition depots and chemical facilities far from the border.
Ukraine’s SBU intelligence agency described these strikes as a major blow to Russia’s military capabilities. In response, Russia claimed to have intercepted US-supplied Atacms missiles and UK-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles, vowing retaliation.
As the conflict intensifies, both sides continue to exchange strikes, underscoring the deepening humanitarian and strategic crisis in the region.
