Italy kicked off their Nations League campaign with a stunning 3-1 victory over France, but the triumph came at a cost as Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori was forced off with an injury. The 21-year-old was caught in a freak accident when Ousmane Dembele, tackled by another player, accidentally landed his studs on the back of Calafiori’s leg. Despite attempting to play on, the injury proved too severe, and he was replaced minutes later.
The match started with high drama as Bradley Barcola stunned Italy by scoring for France just 12 seconds in, intercepting a loose pass and finishing clinically. Italy almost responded immediately, but Davide Frattesi’s header cannoned off the crossbar.
Italy drew level in spectacular fashion when Federico Dimarco fired home a sensational volley from a deft flick by Sandro Tonali. The match was especially poignant for Newcastle’s Tonali, who made his return to international football after serving a 10-month ban for breaching gambling regulations.
Italy took the lead early in the second half through Inter Milan’s Frattesi, who found the back of the net with a clinical finish after receiving a well-placed ball from Mateo Retegui. The victory was sealed when Giacomo Raspadori outmuscled France’s William Saliba to control a pass from Destiny Udogie, before slotting home Italy’s third goal.
The game also marked a significant milestone for France, as Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise made his senior debut, following his participation in this summer’s Olympic Games.
Despite the injury blow to Calafiori, Italy’s performance delivered a statement in the Nations League opener, showcasing their depth and resilience.
