Who Killed Our Children?” Nithari Parents Demand Answers After Convict’s Acquittal in ‘House of Horrors’ Case

Nearly 20 years after the horrifying discovery of 19 women and children’s bodies in Noida’s notorious “house of horrors,” the families of the victims are still searching for answers, following the shocking acquittal of Surinder Koli, the last man convicted in the case. On November 12, 2025, the Supreme Court overturned Koli’s conviction, citing that his confessions—allegedly extracted under torture—were unreliable. With this final judgment, Koli walks free, leaving the lingering question: if Koli and his accomplice Moninder Singh Pandher are innocent, who is responsible for the horrific deaths of these children?

The case first made national headlines in December 2006 when police discovered human remains near a bungalow in Noida, a suburb of New Delhi. The victims, mostly children from the nearby slums of Nithari, had been killed, dismembered, and in some cases, reportedly raped. Moninder Singh Pandher, a wealthy businessman, and Surinder Koli, his domestic servant, were arrested after the remains were found in the sewer outside their home. The gruesome nature of the crime shook the nation and exposed India’s social divides, with the victims coming from poor migrant families, while the perpetrators lived in an affluent neighborhood.

Both men were convicted of murder and rape, and Koli was sentenced to death. However, in 2023, Pandher was released after the court ruled there was insufficient evidence to support his conviction. Koli’s recent acquittal has reignited the case, leaving the families of the victims grappling with anger, confusion, and a deep sense of injustice.

The acquittal has sparked a new wave of outrage in Nithari. Many of the victim’s families, who once lived in the area, have since moved away. A few who remain, like Sunita and Jhabbu Lal Kanaujia, whose 10-year-old daughter Jyoti was one of the victims, struggle to understand how the case could have reached such a conclusion. “If they are innocent, then how come they were in prison for 18 years?” Sunita asks, tears streaming down her face.

Jhabbu Lal, who spent years gathering evidence and pleading with police for justice, has lost hope. “If they’re not guilty, then who is? And what happened to our children?” he asks, echoing the sentiment of many other families who have waited almost two decades for closure.

In a devastating statement, the Supreme Court acknowledged the horrific nature of the crimes and the immense suffering of the victims’ families. However, it also criticized the investigation, noting that police had relied too heavily on Koli’s confessions, which were recorded after an extended period of custody and appeared to be influenced by coercion. The court also condemned the police for failing to investigate crucial leads, including potential connections to organ trade, and for neglecting the many complaints of missing children in the area.

As many in Nithari reflect on the case and the judicial process, the pain of unanswered questions remains. Some families, like that of Pappu Lal, whose eight-year-old daughter Rachna also disappeared and was later confirmed to be a victim, are left wondering if earlier police action could have saved their children. “If the police had acted sooner, many children could have been saved,” says Pappu Lal, who spent months searching for his daughter before the truth was revealed.

Despite the legal outcome, the emotional scars of this tragedy are still raw. As the residents of Nithari continue to ask “Who killed our children?” the case remains one of India’s most disturbing and unresolved criminal mysteries, with no clear answers and justice still slipping through the fingers of those who need it most.
